The largest and deepest sinkhole in the world is Xiaozhai Tiankeng, in Fengjie, China. Its name means something like "well of heaven" or "heavenly."
With its 662 meters deep, 626 meters long and 537 meters wide, it is one of the most impressive natural attractions on Earth.
In addition to a great variety of fauna and flora, it is home to an underground river that measures a total of 8.5 km that ends in a spectacular waterfall. In the rainy season, a waterfall is also generated at the mouth of the sinkhole.

Any new bathophobia facts for us?? :D
Yes!
Tumblr media
Meet Taam ja’, the blue hole in the Yucatán Peninsula that was only discovered by scientists in 2021 and details were just released in 2023. It is the second-deepest blue hole in the world at a staggering 900 feet deep, just shy of the 980-foot deep Dragon Hole in South China. The name is Mayan for “deep water”.
The walls of Taam ja’ plunge down at an 80 degree angle and the sinkhole is nearly 500 feet across. Even though the hole lies beneath only about 16 feet of water, all the pictures of it kind of suck. Sorry.

Prompt 349
(So Dredge has new DLC, which means my Merfolk & Eldritch Ghosts has gained new inspiration)
Now, if one were to ask what happened to Amity Park, many people would ask what you were even talking about. The city was rather out of sight, out of mind, to say the least- even without the government coverup.
It was well known, to those that even knew of the town in the first place, that it was a ghost town, abandoned from sinkhole problems, roads diverted and fences put up to prevent people from entering. Of course, if one made it past that first fence, and then the overgrown wall, and then another electrified net, and through the invisible barrier not meant to keep them out but something else in, they’d know that wasn’t true.
Oh sure, one could claim some sort of sinkhole, what with how the only building not half destroyed was some mimicry of a floating rig, standing strong in the dark waters that now covered everything else. But even a sinkhole should not go so deep, waters turning from pitch darkness to a heavy green… several hundred miles deeper than the deepest trenches.
And the denizens of the water didn’t appreciate the rig protected by its tower, or the boats of white protected by buzzing barriers that tried to heave them from the waters for study. Yes, what happened to Amity Park was far more a mystery than it should be, unless you were one of those once-humans in the depths.
But well, it wasn’t the GIW who would be asking them.

One thing I keep thinking about watching RT's minecraft letsplay is how the mines yearn for him, as much as he yearn for them. A tacit dialogue is happening between these two without him even realizing it.
He is the ruler of that world, but the depths are the one who makes the rules.
The only cherry grove biome he found so far is on a big hollow mountain. Like a cheese in the mousetrap, it awaits for a clueless traveler to lure. He, however, dives head first in the depths of the mountain, conquers it and builds his house on top of it. The bait turns into reward, the predator and prey becomes neighbors.
You can't take a single step in that world without falling into a random ravine or a sinkhole. If you're not careful enough, the last thing you'll see is all-consuming darkness. The earth is parted and, as if mirroring that behavior, he parts the ocean. Now you caught its attention.
The connection had been established. Not a humane one, though, but rather the one an animal might have with its favorite toy. It's playing with him: pretends to help to navigate through its deepest and darkest parts for hours and hours just to watch how his sanity is slowly slipping away. Getting the depths' curiosity could be hard, but what about getting its respect?
He leaves. He doesn't want to, but he has to.
It let him go. It doesn't have to, but it wants to.
He builds a tall monument up to the sky just to tease it. It sprinkles some dead-ends mineshafts under tall terracotta pillars just to tease him.
He is the ruler of that world, who doesn't mind playing by depths' rules.

The deepest and largest natural well on the planet is called Xiaozhai Tiankeng. It is located in Fengjie, Chonqinun Municipality, in the heart of China.
This amazing well is completely natural and reaches a depth of 662 meters, with a length of 626 meters and a width of 537 meters.
But the most surprising thing is not just its dimensions or its nearly vertical walls, but the explosion of life it hosts.
Xiaozhai Tiankeng is what geologists call a sinkhole or valley, a depression of the soil generated, among other factors, by the effect of water.
In this case, it has formed on top of a cave and hosts an underground river that measures 8.5 kilometers in total and flows into a spectacular waterfall.
Its enormous size makes it the largest and deepest sink of its kind, known as tiankeng, in the world.
In addition to its size, Xiaozhai Tiankeng impresses by the biodiversity it houses inside. Its base is so large that it gives shelter to about 1,300 plant species, such as ginkgo, and wild animals.
Among the most fascinating "tenants" to stroll through their underground forest stands out the nebula panther (Neofelis nebulosa), a feline with unmistakable fur that reaches 1.1 meters long and usually rests in trees.
This tiankeng is located in a vast karstic area of 280 km2 formed by limestone. Experts believe the sink, between 511 and 662 meters deep, has taken shape over the past 128,000 years.
For much of its history, until the cave’s roof collapsed, it was a massive underground cavity. Throughout China, other remarkably sized tiankeng are also found, such as Dashiwei.
Interestingly, despite its dimensions, Xiaozhai Tiankeng began studying relatively recently, although the local population has known it since ancient times.

Analog Horror List
Analog horror is uniquely known for its low quality and low visual styles. Or VHS style. They can widely range to a found footage or a visual guide style formatting.
Here are some noted ones:
These videos can contain disturbing content, as well as content that can induce a epileptic seizure if you choose to watch any of them.
2h32: A series of videos that are all two minutes and thirty-two seconds long.
Backrooms - The Otherside: A found footage of the back rooms.
Basswood County: Humanoid creatures that kill humans.
Cave Crawler: A video game (no commentary) about a special remote controlled bot meant to look for missing people (or bodies) in caves.
Chezzkids Archives: An archive of games from a website called Chezzkids. The developer went missing and her photos are showing up in the game. May need to have an episode explain it (this one by Minaxa did it well) as there are clues outside of the videos as well.
Cloud Observation: A short observation video on a cloud that seems to be growing limbs.
Escape the Backrooms: A combination of found footages and commercials, it details the backroom and people trying to escape from it.
Eventide - Anomaly Infestation: A news report of anomalies.
Fear Virus: A quick guide on how to protect yourself from a new, highly infectious virus that causes mutations in humans to become something they fear.
Floaters: A video and short guide. It details how humans are suddenly floating into the air.
Gemini Home Entertainment: A series of VHS styled video tapes. Neptune has mutated and is now infecting Earth with strange things called "woodcrawlers" and other mysterious happenings.
Green Mountain Broadcast Center: A archival for tapes. Only one on this channel labled "Live Traffic" which documents a strange storm.
Greylock: One of my favorites so far. About the government experimenting with tulpa and possibly uncovering an ancient god.
Happy Meat Farms: Animal testing that causes severe deformities.
Hi I'm Mary Mary: A woman wakes up in a house with no exits. She then has to face her greatest fears.
Identity Test: A test on whether or not you can tell the difference between normal faces, and distorted ones.
Itch File: A diver touches a random creature that ejects a pus like substance on him with a virus. Severe trypophobia warning.
Koala Superdeep Borehole Incident: The deepest man-made hole has a bit of an unnerving find.
Local 58 Season One: A news station trying to report on the news, when a broadcast alert stating to not look at the moon is reported. Season two
Harmony and Horror: A VHS style of film. as you watch, you discover the oddities and mysteries of the toys tore.
Marble Hornets: You know what this is.
Mister Manticore: Asks you to memorize a picture before asking you to find the differences. Has quick fleshing images.
Midwest Angelica: A piece of an alien breaks away and onto Earth as it passes the exosphere. It quickly folds into horror beyond comprehension.
Monument Mythos Season One: In an alternate world, where the statues seem to be more than just simple monuments. Season Two Season Three
Omega Mart Ad Compilation: Adds that are attempting to be targeted towards humans. More silly and deranged than scary.
Raining Fire (EAS Snario): A EAS scenario of a mentor shower suddenly hailing Earth on Christmas Eve. Leading to event after event.
Surreal Broadcast: A news station with things happening in the background that are related to a cult. Season Two Season Three
Searching for the Five: Five men suddenly disappeared, only leaving behind a few clues.
Sinkhole: A very hungry sinkhole.
Stone Cold Series: Strange eyes have suddenly started to show up in the night.
The Anglers Trap: A guide on what to do when you encounter a tree called the anglers trap. Which lures in humans like an angler fish.
The Backrooms: Where it all started, I believe. The Backrooms are limital spaces.
The Children Under the House: A therapist tries to find out why a young girl has suddenly stopped talking. Her imaginary friends of course, know why.
The Mandela Catalogue: Hostile creatures called alternates (alters for short) that mimic humans, but don't do it quite right. It mixed Christianity and horror together.
The Oldest View: A man finds a random stairwell in a tree that leads miles down. It turns out it's an old mall. Made by the same man who created the Backrooms.
The Scrimblo Catalogue: A joke analog horror based off of a twitter meme. Part Two
The Smile Tapes: A new fungai releases spores that infect humans that causes the muscle in the faces to distort into a smile and causes hysteria.
The Swarm: Aggressive, hungry mosquitos created by a science project gone wrong.
The Quentin Sanders Tapes: A man named Quentin sanders goes to Foxwood university only to discover a eldritch monster.
The Walten Files: Possessed animatronics, one of the founder's family goes missing while the other conspired against them. And not to forget the possessed animatronics.
They Lie Above: Follows the story of a son of a missing farmer who was abducted by aliens, and Neil Armstrong. Who's memories were erased after encountering a alien space craft.
VibingLeaf: Three videos that have a early youtube "lost videos" esque style.
Vita Carnis: A guide on strange fauna and flora seemingly made entirely, out of meat.
White Door Opened: Set in Poland, monsters and strange red mist begins to spread. Of course it starts with humans messing with things they shouldn't mess with.
Winter of 83: Snowmen come to life, and they aren't happy.
-Did I miss any? Let me know! I'll try to keep this updated as I deeper and deeper, but I can't catch everything.

A D&D map inspired by the forest sinkholes found in China. This small cavern formed by this sinkhole's collapse has been colonized by trees and vegetation, sustained by a pond at its deepest point. The pond surges and shrinks with seasonal rains and droughts, over time its runoff has carved a tunnel through weak rock that connects into the network of caves, tunnels, and caverns that form the Underdark. Of course, what also serves as an entrance for adventurers into the Underdark also serves as an exit for its denizens. Raiders from underground civilizations may use this sinkhole to access the surface. The cavern is also a holy place to a cult of Eilastree worshipping drow, viewed as a gift from their goddess to the underground exiles. This map is available on my Patreon in day/night + grid/gridless versions in full size and w/o watermark.

The Original Location of the Ruyi Jingu Bang Has an Actual Geologic Site!
In a delightful coincidence given that we just finished Chapter 3 of Xiyouji for this book club, I happened to stumble across the fact that there is an area in the world which local people--in particular fishermen--believe to be the spot where Sun Wukong found (and stole) his golden cudgel. This is the Dragon Hole, the world’s deepest underwater sinkhole at just over 980 ft, located on a reef in the South China Sea. Blue holes are sinkholes that form through erosional processes in blocks of limestone while the limestone is on dry land and before the holes are flooded by sea-level rise.
Long called the “eye” of the South China Sea by locals, viewed from above the Dragon Hole looks dark blue due to its great depth compared to the light blue of the water on top of the reef.
I’ve included a few photos below as well as a link to an article detailing more about this amazing piece of planet Earth’s features. It’s always a wonderful thing when mythology and geology combine!

In the forests of Guangxi China is the sinkhole of Xiaozhai Tiankeng. Known as the Heavenly Pit, it is the largest sinkhole on Earth at 2,054 ft. long and 1,762 ft wide. At its deepest point its plunges 2,172 ft deep. Over 1,200 species of plants and fauna can be found on the floor of the Heavenly Pit as well as numerous animal species that call it home, including the endangered Clouded Leopard. Discovered in 1994, it is believed the Xiaozhai Tiankeng has developed over the last 128,000 years.

Words To Remember
She looks at me with an expression I don't recognize I stand in the rain, waiting for her vocal chords to play Thinking I know exactly what she's going to say When she six strings the words together "I know your past. I know what you've done. What you've been Who you were."
I hang my head in the deepest of shame A past filled with potholes, sinkholes and never ending down pours I know where this goes from here I've been on this road a few times before And so I say nothing in my defense because I don't have a defense There's nothing that I can say I have expected the fall before I could ever stand up At least the rain washes tears away so she can't see me cry
"I don't care," she says And I'm not sure if my hearing is correct Is this onset deafness from years of headphones and the volume always turned up all the way Instant hearing loss
"Your past doesn't define you. Your past is not who you have to be, I know your not that person, I see it, I feel it. I know it. Your past is not who I see when I look at you It's not what I feel within your heart."
These words are new And my eyes continue to flow with salt water drops Something I've never heard before How can she forgive when I can't let it go?
"You're you now. And I love you for it."
In six months she would be gone A relapse that lead to a visit from the hooded skeleton king Her words will never leave me.
Your past doesn't define you

The Depths Were Hungry, So They Ate
Deep in the depths of the ocean, there is a pit. Like all pits, it is deep and dark and empty, but unlike most, this pit is hungry, and it is named Udun-Ma. For now, it is just the ocean depths, the deepest caves, the sinkholes so deep they may as well lead nowhere, but it knows there is more. It knows there is an up, and that up has concepts and sights and sounds and smells that it wants. And so the pit reaches out, to touch the surface and pull it down.
Cracks, narrow and miles long, extend from the sea. Some are rivers, some are empty pits of darkness, but one thing is always true - they are unknowably deep. The rivers could be a dozen metres or a dozen miles, it makes no difference when nothing emerges from their treacherous currents. The pits are dark enough that nothing at the bottom will ever see the light of day. They extend, reaching, grasping, surrounding as much land as they possibly can in this rough approximation of depth, but the pit is not satisfied. The surface is still the surface, the depths relegated to the cracks in the world, so what is to be done?
The rain and the dark will drown this area. Monsoons whenever possible, cloud cover when not, and through darkness the surface too may become the deep, a crack of emptiness so that the pit may better touch and sample the world.
